Weyerbacher Merry Monks Ale

Weyerbacher Brewing Co.
Weyerbacher Merry Monks Ale
Easton, Pennsylvania
5/22/2009, bottle, 9.3 abv

Smell

Started with basic yeast & banana, but once it warmed up, the banana smell was very prominent. I spilled some on my shirt and smelled bananas all night.

Appearance

Slightly hazy golden orange with a huge head that overflowed on to the counter.

Taste

Sweet to start, but quickly replaced by a prickly, stinging alcohol burn. Make sure you have a designated driver if having more than one.

Comments

I wanted to like this more because I like monks, but I didn't. Probably just not my style (Belgian style triple)

  1. I've got this beer in my fridge as we speak. I've been meaning to try it, but maybe I'll push it to the rear of the line-up now. Doesn't sound too good.

Have you had others of the style to compare it to, or was it justnot a good beer?

  2. I've never thought that a wheat beer smelled or tasted like bananas, haha. Instead, I always think they smell/taste like creamed corn, yummm.

  3. I have not had many, if any, Belgian Style Triples, so I can’t compare it to others of the same style. I am gradually making my way up the big beer ladder, but so far, this style doesn’t do it for me. Was it bad? No, definitely not.

It may be a bit too much for a hot summer day, so perhaps moving it to the back of the refrigerator is appropriate.
