Pliny the Elder

Russian River Brewing Company
Pliny the Elder
Santa Rosa, California
October 19, 2010, on tap at Russian River Brewing Company, Santa Rosa, CA, 8.0 abv

Smell

Pine needles, sap, and grapefruit.

Appearance

Bright golden orange with a moderate, bright with head. It may have even had a halo around it, but I might have just imagined that.

Taste

A fantastic fusion of sweet malt and hoppy bitterness. Definitely not a hop bomb, but a perfectly balanced beer with floral, piney, citrusy, and fruity flavors. The 8.0% alcohol is non-existent in the taste, but it sneaks up on you because it is so smooth and goes down way too easy.

Comments

Truly one of the Holy Grails of beer. Too bad it's so hard to find. They don't distribute in Maryland...I had to go to California just to try it.

  1. So sad they don't distribute to the east coast. I'd be all over it in a second. The Communist Republic of California isn't somewhere I plan to visit any time soon so it looks like I will have to be satisfied with just reading reviews of how awesome this beer is.
